to the Murdered Jews of Europe
Challenge
In 2005 a place of remembrance for about 6 million murdered Jews was build in the city center of Berlin. Observing visitors behavior at the Monument it becomes clear that young people in particular do not understand the significance of the memorial. Young people are missing a personal connection to the Holocaust. For this reason we are re-staging personal stories of witnesses’ to enable an emotional experience at the Berlin Holocaust Memorial.

The app allows us to find out more about different sounds we experienced during the visit. We can also find out more about each witness and their fates.
All we need is a smartphone and headphones to enable an individual emotional experience.
In our concept we wanted to consciously include the spatial and visual effect of the monument, for this reason we decided to focus on an audible experience.
Outcome
With real stories as a walk-in sound installation we create a more modern form of remembrance. We enable visitors to explore different phases in the life of persecuted Jews. Moving through the memorial, the position of visitors is determined by their phones GPS data. Based on this data, different sounds are being played through headphone which creates an immersive 3D soundscape. With every step we take, the sound is changing and new events within the story are being triggered.
