Challenge
How can classical literature inspire its former fascination in a young audience as a digital medium? To answer this question, the novel by the French author Jules Vernes "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was reimagined as an interactive graphic novel.
Approach
Animated
illustrations
and
interactive
moments
create
an
enhanced
reading
experience
that
is
intended
to
support
the
reader
while
they
immerse
themselves
in
a
fascinating
underwater
world.

All the illustrations are hand drawn and have been digitally colored.
At certain points, we included interactions to bring the characters to life and keep readers involved in the plot.
By clicking on the tooltip icon, the user receives help on available interaction.

Outcome
The interactive graphic novel “20,000 Miles” uses the possibilities of digital technology such as tilt sensors and touch gestures to enhance the readers experience. The screen consists mostly of picture-in-picture elements instead of a more traditional comic layout. In order to not interfere with the flow of reading, we consciously include sounds, animations and interactions at specific moments in the novel.
